Next week is our second A Night of Record Machine-ness in Kansas City for the summer. The last one was a great sucess. We had about 200 or more people packed into Bryce’s house for so much fun they almost fined us. This time we are having it at a proper venue: The Czar Bar. It will be to celebrate Perhapsy coming to Kansas City in support of their new record. They will be joined by Capybara and Sam Billen. It is going to be a great night and hopefully we can pack out 200+ people in Czar Bar so please come out. It also got a nice write up in the Pitch.

Interstates played last week to packed out home crowd at the 930 Listening Room in Louisville last week. Our friend Sean from Buzzgrinder.com was there and he snapped a few pics for us.

Both Interstates and Max Justus have been getting some great responses from their MP3′s of the Month.

Interstates released their remix of Brooke Waggoneer Eyes O’ Eyes last month and we got this response:

I’m going to get lost today. I’m going to stare into her eyes again and never come out – I can feel it. I know it’s going to happen, my senses are tingling inside me, like pins-and-needles in my limbs, like a heart attack, or falling upside down. She will be home soon, she will walk through the front door and she will want me to look at her. God, I have to do this everyday and every time it’s more dangerous! It feels like I’ve lost myself, her grey/blue eyes just pull me in – a world inside a world, deep and loved.

We have been getting the word out on Max Justus first off we sent out Ctrl_Alt_Dance video and MP3′s earlier this month. The folks at Idolator really loved it:

He revels in just making beats and bleeps and throwing them out there, and there’s always a hint of softness and beauty behind the retro goodies. It’s rare that this kind of thing strikes me as emotionally generous and fun.

Stuart Bury directed a video for Justus’ “Ctrl_Alt_Dance” that also has a simple warmth to it, matching the glassy beauty of the track. It’s little more than animated drawings of cute robots dancing. Sometimes the robots get a little nasty, but that’s about it. And I love it.

Brooke Waggoner vs Interstates

As Brooke Waggoner readied her debut full length she asked Interstates to do a remix of her song Fresh Pair of Eyes.  Like any good remix it takes bits and pieces of the original song and makes a brand new song that can stand on its own two feet. This month’s song  Eyes o’ Eyes is just that.

Eyes o’ Eyes is a blissful ambient track that samples elements of the original song, but other than that leaves no traces of similarity behind. If you sign up for Brooke’s mailing list you can download an ep containing the original Fresh Pair of Eyes here and you can download Interstates- Eyes o’ Eyes remix below.

One, he makes some of the more beautiful, often instrumental only laptop electronica we’ve heard in 5 years or so. Two, Justus has offered up his first two records, Ophelia and Talk To Strangers, for free to download off his MySpace page and he’s dropping his third record, Five Leaping Leopards, later this year.  And three, anyone who seriously remixes C&C Music Factory’s “Everybody Dance Now” so well that we actually want to post it is worth their weight in gold.

“I Don’t Love U Anymore” comes off their upcoming EP 4 New Songs and does a great job of showcasing what the band does well. Plus, for a title that implies downtrodden subject matter, the song is surprisingly bouncy, and I think it’s a great song for the pre-Friday blues.

Interstates debut record Run Run is now available for download from Itunes.They have also finished posting all the parts of their tour documentary which you can watch here.

Interstates are playing Indie Day at Ear-X-Tacy Records in their hometown of Louisville, KY this Saturday, July 12th. Go out and celebrate one of America’s last really great independent record stores. Heck its even free and part of the day there is even a discount on vinyl.  Enjoy.

State Bird just released a recording session for Daytrotter.com. For those not familar with the site they have bands come in and record 4 songs live and post a new band Monday – Friday.  State Bird did new versions of Marching Through The Wilderness, The Golden Glowing Mask, I Saw The Light, and The Hollerin’ Mountains. Here is what daytrotter had to say about them:

But mostly, State Bird give the goods that are certainly uncertain, capitalizing on tangents and toasting all of their various influences to make a groove train anchored by words that seem uplifting and positive – filling hearts with love, getting enough rest and basking in light that could be the Lord’s or it could just be a super sunny ass day. It’s kind of immaculate and luscious no matter the source.

They have also recorded an ep aptly entitled 4 New Songs. They sold out of all the copies that they made for the festival but for now you can listen to two new songs via their myspace.

The influences vary on many of the songs, but most of the tracks start off with a stripped-down, slower melody that eventually builds into an explosive jam. “Open Your Ears” feels like a primer for the rest of the album, but doesn’t hinge too much on the electronic backbeats of many of the other songs. “Sudan” is ambient and earthy, with a euphoric, harmonious climax.

This first featured song is a new one from Interstates entitled “Welcome Insight”.  Interstates has just released their debut album entitled Run Run. “Welcome Insight” was orignally released by Interstates on an old self – released out of print ep entitled The Arborist.

Liner Notes by Alex O’Nan:

“Welcome Insight was written during my early 20′s when I was really craving and seeking to find myself.  Interstates guitarist Kyle, only a good friend at the time, and I were meeting for lunch on a regular basis and he was being very honest about unhealthy patterns he saw in my life.  He challenged me to change and grow in many areas and at first I was hurt by his boldness and honesty, but after a few months we grew closer as friends and I began to truly enjoy those times.  The song is one of a set of six I’ve come to call “The Arborist EP”.  I call it that because of the tremendous growth I experienced in my life while I wrote them.  Each song is set to 120 beats per minute and captures my thoughts and feelings while dealing with many different topic in my early 20′s.  This is the first of those songs I’ve added live drums to.”

Other Song of the Months

Interstates had a really great first tour. As you may know, they just returned from touring the South, Texas, and the Midwest with their buddies in the band Foxhole.

From the second we met they were flashing photos on their iPhones and taking tons of videos on their flip video cameras. I told them to compile everything and give us a tour documentary.

Thankfully, they have taken it to heart, and here is the first video in the series:

State Bird executes musical feats that carry a high degree of difficulty for indie-rock bands. During Friday night’s show, the band incorporated heavy doses of funk (shimmering guitar, “Low Rider” percussion, falsetto vocals) and ended a tune with a drum circle (after bongos were surreptitiously placed next to the non-percussionist members).

Coby Hartzler and Jared Riblet pen gorgeous, slightly off-kilter pop anthems that tread ground that might be familiar to fans of Pavement or Modest Mouse, but perform them like 60s love children who were raised in a thrift store.
